In this commentary, Kevin Golden works through Hosea’s notoriously difficult Hebrew, illuminating the prophet’s fortitude both in his marriage and as he watched his homeland decay from within.
“Yahweh took hold of Hosea by his Word so that he feared, loved, and trusted Yahweh above all else” (p. ix).
In this commentary, Kevin Golden works through Hosea’s notoriously difficult Hebrew, illuminating the prophet’s fortitude both in his marriage and as he watched his homeland decay from within. The commentary follows a clear trajectory as Hosea draws from the Torah (especially Deuteronomy), with the fulfillment of Hosea’s proclamation being found in Jesus Christ. Each section closes with a theological application that is not exhaustive of the text but offers a direction forward for preaching and teaching that text.
Following contextual information on the Hebrew text, structure, historical setting, and so on, Golden offers astute commentary in the following sections.
Over the years, I have come to value volumes in the Concordia Commentary series, and Kevin Golden’s Hosea commentary exemplifies why. This commentary gives careful attention to the Hebrew text while maintaining a high view of Scripture and emphasizing the theological and pastoral significance of the text for God’s people today. Consistent with the series’ Lutheran orientation, this volume successfully models a distinctly Christian reading of this prophetic book. This commentary will be a blessing to many!

Dr. Golden’s commentary features sophisticated analysis of the Hebrew text and a clear articulation of the meaning of the book of Hosea. But throughout, the author also constantly connects Hosea to the New Testament and relates this prophetic book to the ministry of pastors and the church today. These latter comments are not tacked on; they are substantive and convincing. I highly recommend this commentary to pastors of all denominations.

Dr. Golden’s new commentary on Hosea offers us detailed analysis on the Hebrew text, sensitive Christological application, and pastoral usefulness. Few commentaries on Hosea manage to strike this balance! I highly recommend Golden’s work for ministers who aim to connect God’s Word in Hosea’s original context to God’s world, where his people dwell today.
—Dr. Jerry Hwang, Executive Editor of Evangelical Review of Theology, World Evangelical Alliance
Kevin Golden is a pastoral theologian. Both the adjective and the noun are on display in this outstanding commentary. Golden writes for pastors as well as for all who want to be enriched by Hosea’s message, famous for its use of multiple metaphors. Instead of correcting the prophet’s Hebrew and writing style—as is the tendency of many commentaries—Golden respects the text and views it as a faithful witness to Hosea’s words. The commentary pays close attention to the prophet’s use of Law and Gospel as well as to how New Testament authors employ the book to speak of Jesus. Golden has gifted the church!

The Concordia Commentary Series: A Theological Exposition of Sacred Scripture is written to enable pastors and teachers of the Word to proclaim the Gospel with greater insight, clarity, and faithfulness to the divine intent of the Biblical text.
The series will cover all the canonical books of the Old and New Testament, with an original translation and meticulous grammatical analysis of the Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek of each text. The foremost interpretive lens centers on the unified proclamation of the person and work of Christ across every Scriptural book.
The Commentary fully affirms the divine inspiration, inerrancy, and authority of Scripture; Each passage bears witness to the confession that God has reconciled the world to Himself through the incarnation, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ His Son.
Authors expose the rich treasury of language, imagery, and thematic content of the Scripture while supplementing their work with additional research in archaeology, history, and extrabiblical literature. Throughout, God’s Word emanates from authors' careful attention and inculcates the ongoing life of the Church in Word, Sacrament, and daily confession.
