This penitential psalm of David has become a familiar part of the liturgy for many children.

Illuminated by the parable of the prodigal son, children can relate to the muck and mire of sin, being washed clean in baptism, and the joy of salvation.

1. Create in me a clean heart, O God,
   and renew a right spirit within me.
   Cast me not away from Thy presence;
   and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
   Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation;
   and uphold me with Thy free spirit.
